LYMPHEDEMA CONFERENCE for the MEDICAL COMMUNITY

Statistics show that more than 38% of all breast cancer survivors will get lymphedema, as well as an unknown percentage of prostate, melanoma and cervical cancer survivors. There is no cure for lymphedema and so early diagnosis and maintenance is vital to the quality of life for these survivors. This conference will help educate doctors, nurses and therapists about the risk reduction, diagnosis and treatment of this often-debilitating ailment.
Participants will learn:
- Differences between Lymphedema and other edemas
- Anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology of the lymphatic system
- Causes of Lymphedema related to various cancers
- Identification of risk reduction methods
- Treatment protocols for Lymphedema patients
- Inflammatory changes in the lymphatics and their treatment
- Training and certification processes and how to incorporate a Lymphedema Program in your existing practice

ENHANCEMENT'S OTHER PROJECTS
- Enhancement acknowledges the need for a Breast Cancer Resource Center in San Luis Obispo. At present, the closest ones are in either Santa Barbara or Monterey. We are working with a number of other organizations to spearhead the formation of a new center in San Luis Obispo.
- It is important that the Hispanic community also have access to the therapeutic exercises shown on the video we produced, called "Focus on Healing through Movement & Dance for the Breast Cancer Survivor." Therefore, we are working to produce a Spanish version.
- Enhancement is working with some university researchers to create studies using the above video.
- Enhancement is working on grant funding to finish a project involving laughter and its potential aid in helping survivors cope with cancer treatment. About 20 hours of taped interviews with survivors and their funny stories while going through Chemotherapy was donated to Enhancement, and we are seeking funds to edit it and create a study with support groups on the impact such a video will have in these groups.
